Engines
The Akela is equipped with a pair of 1995 Mann V-12 Marine, Fresh Water cooled, direct injected turbo charged, 1,100 horsepower diesel engines.
Generators
The Akela is equipped with a pair of 32 kW (each) Westerbeke Marine Diesel Generators. Both generators have been fitted with Westerbeke sound shields.
AC and Heating
The Akela is equipped with nine air conditioning and heating units throughout the vessel totaling approximately 14 tons of air (six 25,000 BTU units, one 17,000 BTU unit, one 12,000 BTU unit, one 7,000 BTU unit).
Fuel System, Tanks and Lines
The fuel capacity of the Akela is 2,500 U.S. gallons. The vessel is equipped with multiple aluminum fuel tanks. The Akela has a 1,200 gallon fresh water storage capacity. This system converts sea water to fresh water providing a continuous fresh and hot water supply.
Safety Equipment
The engine room is fitted with a remote controlled automatic and manual Halon 1301 system. The Akela is equipped with two life rafts stowed above the bridge. There are seven fire extinguishers on board and carbon monoxide detectors in every room.
Bridge Equipment
The bridge is equipped with the following equipment: Furuno 8 Mile Radar, Furuno GAS Radar, Decca Radar, Ritchie Magnetic Compass, two Furuno Fish Finders, three GPS tracking systems, SSB Radio, two VHF Radios, Warner Electric Motion Control, Dual Side Scanning Sonar, Knot Meter, Navonics Chart Interface and a North Star Loran C.
Storage
The Akela is stored under the cover of a full shed. The Akela is protected from most elements and is in excellent condition.
Stabilizers
Among the improvements for the 2006 season, the Akela is adding the WESMAR stabilizer system. This electronic stabilizing system automatically adjusts the vessel motion for maximum comfort, resisting up to 90% of the rolls in most seas.
